Summer Yoga Workshop – Sunday 3rd August

As Summer is well and truly underway, it’s a time when many of us feel the need for a break from work and the usual routine so we can have some rest and recharge our energies. This year the Summer Workshop will focus on Prana, the universal energy within and around us. We will explore how we can stimulate our physical and spiritual energy through asanas and the breath, enjoy some home made treats, and take some time to deeply relax the mind and body with a long, nourishing relaxation (yoga nidra).

The Summer Workshop is on Sunday 3rd August, 10am to 1pm at Shobrooke Village Hall, and costs £15. Places are limited so please get in touch if you would like to book a place.

Namaste.

Strength in Yoga

The practice of yoga is often associated with stretching and releasing. We think about yoga enabling us to relax the body and help us to become flexible, but rarely do we think about yoga as a way of developing our physical strength.

Our bodies inevitably experience wear and tear, and sometimes this can result in an ongoing discomfort or injury. Yoga can play a key role is addressing these problems and helping us avoid them, if we focus on developing the strength in our bodies alongside developing our flexibility. Areas of the body such as the lower back are often already overstretched by the day to day activities of our lives, and so focusing on simply stretching doesn’t completely solve our discomfort, or protect the body to avoid similar problems in the future.

If we look for our yoga to strengthen the body, as well as stretch it, we can build a new sense of physical confidence and awareness. By being aware of the breath in postures and beginning to stay for more breaths, and using aids such as blocks, belts and bolsters when we need to, we can modify our practice to help us move forwards with increased awareness. This mindful approach enables us to develop our strength gradually, in tune with our body’s individual needs, and at a pace that suits us. In this way we enable our body to find its own way forwards to becoming stronger, as well as flexible, and it is this combination of strength and flexibility that creates a feeling of genuine physical harmony.

“The stronger you are, the lighter you will feel.  A consistent yoga practice will make you strong and light.  The whole tone of your body will change as your strength increases.  You will have an easier time handling your own body weight.  You will feel sturdier and more sure of yourself.  Work to increase your strength and be happy when a pose challenges you in this way.”  Erich Schiffmann , The Spirit and Practice of Moving into Stillness.

Being in the Moment

The new year has started, and with it often comes the expectations we place on ourselves, to be healthier, stay fitter and so on. These expectations can be hard to live up to, and can become part of the ongoing process of feeling that we are just not quite ‘doing enough’ to feel happy, and so we feel frustrated with ourselves once more.

Contentment and harmony rarely arise from a feeling of control, they are more linked to a sense of being at one with what is happening to us at any given moment. The basis of mindfulness is to focus on the here and now, and to make the best of this moment. Yoga encourages you to be fully present in the moment by focusing on your breath, and so your body.  When we learn to do this we start to feel calmer, steadier and more balanced, and so we feel happier. Here’s to being in the moment, and to a happy year ahead.
