International Yoga Day

Tuesday 21st June is International Yoga Day, a day when we celebrate and share India’s wonderful gift to the world.

We are so fortunate to have yoga available to us here in the west. Whatever your starting point, yoga helps you discover and accept who you really are, to find a greater sense of balance and harmony in your life, and to feel whole again.

Free yourself from anger and desire, which are the causes of sin and conflict, and thereby make yourself whole. This is the essence of yoga; this is the means by which you come to know the soul, and thereby attain the highest spiritual state. The Bhagavad Gita

Happy World Yoga Day!

Happy New Year

The new year has arrived and with it the prospect of new things. A new year is a time of increased hopefulness as we look forward to fresh opportunities, but it can also feel challenging given the future is unpredictable, and sometimes we face real difficulties.

Wherever you find yourself as 2016 begins, life is changeable and few things are certain.  If we can take the time to notice our breathing, to pause and become fully present, we can start to experience greater peace and happiness not just in the moment, but also throughout the year to come.

‘The miracle is not to walk on water. The miracle is to walk on the green earth in the present moment,  to appreciate the peace and beauty that are available now’ Thich Naht Hanh

International Yoga Day – 21st June

Sunday 21st June is the first International Yoga Day!

Following the request of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to the United Nations earlier this year, the UN agreed to an annual International Yoga Day on 21st June. From the yogic perspective, the Summer Solstice marks the move to Dakshinayana, the 6 month period between the Summer and Winter solstice. It is believed to be easier to practice spirituality during Dakshinayana.

Over 170 countries are planning yoga events to mark this day. Here there will be a free yoga session from 8.30am to 9.15am on Sunday 21st June in Shobrooke Playing field to celebrate this wonderful day. All abilities are welcome to come and share the wonderful gift that is yoga (please bring a mat).

Yoga is an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Narendra Modi
