International Yoga Day – 21st June

Sunday 21st June is the first International Yoga Day!

Following the request of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to the United Nations earlier this year, the UN agreed to an annual International Yoga Day on 21st June. From the yogic perspective, the Summer Solstice marks the move to Dakshinayana, the 6 month period between the Summer and Winter solstice. It is believed to be easier to practice spirituality during Dakshinayana.

Over 170 countries are planning yoga events to mark this day. Here there will be a free yoga session from 8.30am to 9.15am on Sunday 21st June in Shobrooke Playing field to celebrate this wonderful day. All abilities are welcome to come and share the wonderful gift that is yoga (please bring a mat).

Yoga is an invaluable gift from India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Narendra Modi
